Your guitar is a precision instrument. As a player you will naturally want to get the best out of it.
Therefore it is important that your guitar is set up to suit your playing style and your preferences. You might prefer a low action, as many players do, or you might want a higher set up to use a slide, etc.
Whatever your playing style there are certain things that just have to be right: your frets need to be level and smooth with no “buzz”, your intonation needs to be correct and your electrics need to have no crackle or hum.
It also doesn’t hurt to give it a bit of a polish now and again! A guitar kept in the best possible condition will always be a joy to look at, handle and play.
Drakeford Guitar Services specialises in setups, electrical repairs and general maintenance of all electric and acoustic guitars, 6 or 12 string, including bass guitars.
Because your guitar is made of wood it is a living thing and it will always be affected by storage conditions, temperature and humidity. Over time it will need various adjustments and maintenance to keep it in optimum condition and playing as it should. Not surprising, then, that by far my most commonly requested service is a full setup and electrical check-over.
It’s not until you get your instrument back after one of these setups that you realise how badly it has been playing recently. Trust me on this, you will notice the difference!
I have a guide price list (see below) for the more common work that is asked for but a lot of the time I am asked for a more individual approach for the discerning musician. It’s always best to contact me to discuss your individual requirements.
I have worked extensively with top quality instruments over many years as a technician and musician and I have created Drakeford Guitar Services to give a more personal and bespoke service to musicians who need that little bit of extra attention for their instruments.
Below are some guide prices for my services. Please bear in mind that these are only guides and all work is individually quoted according to the condition of the instrument once I have appraised it.
All prices and quotes for setup and maintenance work do not include strings – and I do not put old strings back on guitars I’ve set up! You’re just gonna have to provide me with some new ones of your choice or I can supply most commonly-used strings from stock.
I work with all players – from the enthusiast / hobbyist to the semi-pro and full touring professional. No matter what level of guitarist you are your life will always be that much easier if your instrument is a joy to play and in tune all the way up the fretboard.
This lovely old Telecaster was in need of a major overhaul and some serious TLC. Here’s what it got:
New electrics with aged knobs and plate, new nut, frets levelled, crowned and polished, thorough clean, neck adjust, restring and intonation set up. The body still looks well-used and a bit beaten up but its owner likes it that way – and people pay extra for that sort of thing nowadays! (Click the images for bigger pictures.)
